Three Things for Thursday: FDA Ban on Red Dye 3, Healthy Grocery Guide,  Website Redesign

1. Major News: FDA Bans Red Dye No. 3! 🍭

As of yesterday, Red Dye No. 3 has officially been banned in the U.S. in food and ingestible drug products! Red Dye No. 3, also known as erythrosine, is a synthetic color additive derived from petroleum that gives foods a bright cherry-red hue. It’s commonly used in candies, snacks, baked goods, frostings, beverages, and medications (think bright-red cough syrup and vitamins). Shockingly, despite being banned in cosmetics since 1990 due to its cancer risk, it remained in our food supply for decades. It has already been banned in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

We won’t see Red 3 disappear from store shelves overnight. The ban on Red Dye No. 3 involves a phase-out period: food manufacturers must remove the dye from their products by January 2027, while producers of ingested drugs will have an additional year, until January 2028, to reformulate their products. For consumers, it’s a reminder to continue reading ingredient labels and choosing products made with natural colorings.
