Our big girl turned FOUR last week! I still can’t believe it, but I won’t go into all those feeling right now. 🥲
It’s been a little overdue, but we finally upgraded her bed to a big-kid bed. Previously, she had the Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Crib, which we converted into the Toddler Bed when she was two. Side note – if you’re looking for a crib or toddler bed, I can definitely recommend that one. It’s made of solid wood, is GREENGUARD Gold certified, and is really cute and durable. We used the Newton Baby Mattress in it, which is also non-toxic, GREENGUARD Gold certified, and is 100% washable and breathable. Our son has the same setup in his room.
Avaya was taking up almost her entire toddler bed to sleep, so as she was nearing her 4th birthday, I knew it was time to get her a bigger bed. It was of the utmost importance for me to get her a non-toxic mattress. That meant no toxic chemicals, off-gassing, chemical flame retardants, or polyurethane foams.
Aaron and I bought the Avocado Green Mattress for ourselves a couple years earlier, and have been very happy with it. You can read my full review of our Avocado Green Mattress here. Before purchasing that mattress for ourselves, I did A TON of research on non-toxic beds. I was obsessed with picking the right one. It was definitely a purchasing decision that I was not making lightly, and one that I’m still confident in today – nearly a few years later.
Here’s what I like about Avocado mattresses as a whole:
- They’re made in America.
- Truly non-toxic – there are no toxic chemicals, off-gassing, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams.
- GOTS Certified Organic. This means, they’re truly organic – from the source material, to the factory, and the finished product.
- GREENGUARD Gold Certified. GREENGUARD Gold certification means the finished products have been tested for prolonged exposure in environmental chambers and meet the most rigorous emission standards for chemical exposure and pollutants – such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and phthalates. Few mattresses and pillows qualify for this gold standard.
- Climate Neutral Certified. In 2019, Avocado Green Mattress became the first mattress company to become Climate Neutral Certified, effectively making the business “carbon neutral.”
- Offers a money-back trial. The regular Avocado mattresses offer a ONE YEAR money back trial, while the Eco mattresses offer a 100-night sleep trial.
- They stand by their products, offering a warranty. The regular Avocado mattresses offer a 25 year limited warranty, while the Eco mattresses offer a 10 year limited warranty.
After sleeping on our own Avocado Mattress for some time, I became an affiliate of the company to keep up to date on promotions and share the product on my platform [I only become affiliates with companies I know, love and trust]. So, when I found out that Avocado was coming out with a new, more affordable, organic mattress for kids, I was all ears. I reached out to the company with interest on getting more information, and they offered me a complimentary Full Eco Organic Kids Mattress to try out and review.
So, here is the Honest & Well review of the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress…
Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress Review
The shipping was quick and easy (delivered by FedEx). I did, however, have to be home to sign for the package delivery (not sure if that’s the case with all Avocado mattresses – it was with our first one as well). The delivery man placed the box on my front porch, and I took it from there. It wasn’t nearly as heavy as I remember my Avocado King mattress being. I was able to drag the box upstairs by myself with this one.
For shipping, the mattresses are tightly compressed, rolled up, and shrink wrapped, making them small enough to fit in a rectangular box. When packaging is opened, they slowly roll out and de-compress, filling with air and puffing up.
After two months of having the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress, here is what we like about it [and what we don’t] so far:
What we like:
- There was absolutely NO smell from the new mattress. Our original Avocado Green Mattress did have a slight natural latex odor for the first day or two, so I expected to have that again… but there was nothing from this one.
- The peace of mind I get from having a truly organic mattress. I covered this above, but I have to emphasize it here again. There are no toxic chemicals, off-gassing, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams in this mattress.
- There’s no need for a boxspring. We put the mattress right on a wooden platform.
- The low-profile makes it just the right size bed for our daughter.
- You can feel the quality in material- the organic cotton cover is so soft!
- It sleeps cool. This mattress is airy and doesn’t trap heat.
- The price is affordable compared to other natural/organic mattresses in the market.
What we don’t like:
- It’s firm. I’m not sure if I should call this a “dislike,” as it may provide the perfect firmness for a child graduating from a crib or toddler bed, but I’m used to the pillow-top softness of my bed, so when laying with my daughter on hers, it does feel firm to me. I’ve even fallen asleep in her bed a couple times and woken up to my arm being asleep (I’m a side sleeper). That tells me the mattress would definitely be too firm for me. She’s had no complaints about it though.
Overall, I’m very happy with the Avocado Eco Organic Kids mattress. Avaya loves it too. She’s been very excited about her big girl bed, and we haven’t had any issues with naps or nights.
Even though the mattress was designed for kids under 115 pounds, my husband or I will often lay on it with our daughter (and son too!) to read a bed-time story, and there’s been no issue. The full mattress is a great size for squeezing the family in for a story.
I can definitely recommend the mattress to anyone looking for graduate their child to a big-kid bed. The quality is great, she loves it, and nothing gives me the peace of mind like knowing my girl is sleeping without flames retardants or other toxic chemicals. Just be aware that it is a little on the firm side. The low profile of this mattress (it’s only 7″ high) would make it especially great for anyone looking for bunk bed or trundle bed mattresses.
