Spinach is a favorite green to sneak into my family’s meals. It’s extremely versatile, so easy to incorporate, and a powerhouse of nutrition.
Health Benefits of Spinach
The health benefits of spinach are amazing. It’s certainly one of the world’s healthiest foods. Spinach is one of the greatest food sources of chlorophyll. If you remember back to science class, chlorophyll is the molecule found in plants that give them that green color and helps convert sunlight into energy (photosynthesis). When we consume chlorophyll, here’s what it does for our bodies:
- helps protect against cancer
- improves liver detoxification
- helps heal wounds
- improves digestion and weight control
- helps protect skin
Aside from the chlorophyll benefits of spinach, it’s also loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients. Given how few calories there are in spinach (only 7 calories per cup raw), it’s easily one of the most nutrient dense foods in existence.
Other health benefits of spinach include:
- helps protect bones with its high vitamin K and magnesium content
- helps protect the heart with its high potassium content
- reduces inflammation
- helps protect cells against damage and the aging process
- boosts the immune system, with its high vitamin A and vitamin C content
- supports eye health with its good source of carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin
- helps protect the skin with its high vitamin A and vitamin C content
