Turns out, I’ve been missing out on an awesome kitchen hack for a long, long time. I learned of this method of storing strawberries only a few weeks ago, tried it out with some fresh-picked pints, and holy smokes, it’s a goodie! These strawberries stayed fresh for way longer than they would have had I just placed them in the crisper drawer. I definitely recommend trying this out – I think you’ll be impressed.
Nobody likes to break strawberries out of the fridge for a good snack only to find them covered in mold. And it’s definitely not pleasant to take a bite out of one and get that gross fermented taste. This happens way too quick, usually only a few days after getting them home from the store. By taking just a little bit of time and a few steps easy when you first bring them home, you can almost guarantee to keep your strawberries fresher longer.
Here are the steps to take.
How to keep your strawberries fresher longer
Step 1: Give them a good wash.
I usually soak my strawberries in a cold water with vinegar bath for a few minutes. This helps to cut down any bacteria or pesticide residues (I always recommend buying organic strawberries, as they do top the Dirty Dozen list). Soak, drain, and give them a rinse.
Step 2: Let them dry completely.
Lay them out on a kitchen towel or paper towels on the counter, letting them air dry.
Step 3: Place them in a mason jar with the lid tightened.
Once the strawberries are completely dry, place them in a mason jar with a lid [like these 32oz wide mouth jars with lids and bands].
Step 4: Place the jar of strawberries in the fridge.
That’s it! Easy-peezy.
I’ll be trying this with raspberries and blueberries soon.
