Spring is in full-swing! Last week I blew up the kiddie pool and let the kids stay out splashing and laughing until dark. While they enjoyed every minute of it, I didn’t realize they were being devoured by black flies and no-see-ums. 😬 It was a clear reminder that it’s time to gear up with some effective insect defense.
So, here’s your reminder: as the warm weather rolls in, so do the bugs! Protecting your family from bug bites is essential, not just for comfort but also for health. Here’s my quick guide on natural bug repellents, including some DIY solutions and my favorite store-bought options.
DIY Natural Bug Repellents
Natural bug repellents can be just as effective as commercial ones, without the chemicals. I typically rely on drops of pure essential oil mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil (jojoba oil works great too!) to protect us from bug bites. Essential oils are a popular choice for natural insect defense because they are derived from plants and have been used for centuries for their medicinal and insect-repellent properties. Here are some of the top essential oils for keeping insects at bay:
1. Citronella
Perhaps the most well-known natural insect repellent, citronella oil is derived from lemongrass and is effective against mosquitoes, flies, and other insects.
2. Lemongrass
This potent essential oil’s strong lemon-herb scent effectively deters mosquitoes, flies, and fleas.
3. Lavender
Lavender oil not only repels mosquitoes but also soothes insect bites and has a calming scent. Its gentle nature makes it a great choice for families with young children. Plus, it smells wonderful and relaxing.
4. Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus oil is particularly effective against mosquitoes and ticks. It contains a compound called PMD (para-menthane-3,8-diol), which is a highly effective insect repellent. It also smells invigorating and fresh.
5. Tea Tree
Tea tree oil is a powerful antimicrobial and insect repellent. It works well against mosquitoes, flies, and lice.
6. Peppermint
Peppermint oil’s strong scent deters mosquitoes, ants, spiders, and even mice.
7. Rosemary
Rosemary essential oil is a powerful natural insect repellent, thanks to its high content of camphor and cineole, which deter mosquitoes, flies, and fleas with their strong aroma.
How to Use Essential Oils for Bug Repellent
To create your own bug repellent, mix approximately 10 drops of your chosen essential oil with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or jojoba oil. You can apply this mixture to exposed skin, just always make sure to dilute properly with the carrier oil, and do a spot test on a small area of skin to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction.
Alternatively, you can create a liquid mixture for a convenient spray application. To create a spray, get yourself a glass spray bottle, like these Amber Glass Spray Bottles. Pure essential oils have a way of degrading plastics, so I always recommend using glass for anything that contains them. Here is a simple DIY essential oil bug repellent spray recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup witch hazel or vodka (acts as a dispersant)
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 30-40 drops of chosen essential oils (see list above)
Combine the ingredients in your glass spray bottle, and shake well. To use, spray a light mist on exposed skin and clothing when going outside. Avoid spraying directly into eyes/face.
Some Tips:
- Stick to around a 50/50 ratio of water and witch hazel (or vodka) for proper dispersal.
- Store in a cool, dark place and use within 6 months.
Favorite Store-Bought Bug Repellents
While DIY solutions are effective, sometimes it’s more convenient to use a ready-made product. Here are some of my favorite commercial bug sprays that are natural and effective:
Badger Bug Spray is made with organic ingredients, including Citronella, Rosemary, and Lemongrass essential oils. This spray is effective and gentle on the skin, making it a great choice for the whole family.
2. Babyganics Insect Repellent Continuous Spray
Babyganics Insect Repellent is formulated with Citronella, Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemongrass and Geranium essential oils. The continuous spray bottle makes it easy to apply evenly.
3. California Baby Natural Bug Repellent Spray
California Baby Natural Bug Repellent Spray is designed with sensitive skin in mind, and is safe for babies over 6 months of age. It uses pure essential oils like Citronella, Lemongrass, and Cedar to repel insects.
4. Murphy’s Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Insect Repellent
Murphy’s Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Insect Repellent uses oil of lemon eucalyptus, a CDC-recommended natural repellent. It’s effective against mosquitoes and ticks, and it provides long-lasting protection. With its potency and ability to deter ticks, this is a good option if you’re going into the woods. The citrus scent is a bonus compared to the chemical smell of many conventional repellents.
Other Natural Bug Repellent Strategies
1. Plant Herbs: Certain herbs, such as basil, lemongrass, and marigolds, can help repel insects. Plant them around your home and outdoor living areas to help cut down on the bugs.
2. Wear Protective Clothing: Long sleeves, pants, and hats can help protect your skin from bites. Choose light-colored clothing, as it is less attractive to mosquitoes.
Whether you prefer to DIY with essential oils or opt for a convenient store-bought option, there’s a solution that will keep your family safe and comfortable all summer long. Enjoy your time outside!
