Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress Review

Why Choose an Organic Mattress

The Hidden Health Risks of Conventional Mattresses:

Most people don’t think twice about their mattress beyond comfort and support, but what if your bed is silently affecting your health? Conventional mattresses are often made with synthetic materials, perfluorinated compounds (PFAS), chemical flame retardants, glues and industry adhesives, and petroleum-based foams that can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. These off-gassing chemicals contribute to poor indoor air quality and can be linked to headaches, respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, and even long-term health concerns like endocrine disruption and immune system stress.

Considering we spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping, our exposure to these chemicals is significant – a mattress is something we breathe in closely for eight or more hours every night. Over time, the constant inhalation of VOCs and other toxins can burden the body, especially for children, pregnant women, and those with chemical sensitivities or asthma.

Beyond air quality, many conventional mattresses are made with polyurethane foam, which not only emits VOCs but also breaks down over time, accumulating dust and microscopic particles that can be inhaled during sleep. Some of the health hazards listed on manufacturer material safety data sheets (MSDS) include: possible cardiac arrhythmias, breathlessness, chest discomfort, irritation of mucous membranes, headache, coughing, asthma-like allergic reaction, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, blurred vision, and reduced pulmonary function.

Highlighting the Dangers of Flame Retardant Chemicals:

I want to highlight the dangers of chemical flame retardants used in many traditional mattresses, because it is a big deal. The widespread use of chemical flame retardants in mattresses dates back to the 1970s when concerns about fire safety surged due to a high number of house fires caused by cigarettes. At the time, many people smoked in bed, and smoldering cigarettes were a leading cause of fatal fires. However, as smoking has declined and public awareness of toxic chemical exposure has increased, the necessity of chemical flame retardants has been rightfully questioned. These chemicals pose significant long-term health risks. They have been found to persist in both the environment and the human body, accumulating over time.

Flame retardants don’t remain locked within the mattress – they gradually break down and become airborne, contaminating household dust that we inevitably inhale or ingest. This is particularly concerning for children, who spend more time in close contact with their mattresses and are more vulnerable to the effects of toxic exposure due to their developing bodies. Research has found that high levels of flame retardant chemicals in the body correlate with cognitive delays, reduced fertility, thyroid dysfunction, and an increased risk of hormone-related cancers. These chemicals have even been found in human breast milk.

Beyond personal health, these chemicals are also a major environmental concern. Flame retardants are known to leach into air and water sources, where they persist and bioaccumulate in wildlife.

Despite the evidence of harm, chemical flame retardants are still used in most conventional mattresses and other furniture. But safer, natural alternatives such as wool, which is inherently flame-resistant, and plant-based fire barriers can effectively meet flammability standards without exposing sleepers to harmful toxins. Naturepedic, Avocado, and other organic mattress manufacturers use these non-toxic solutions to create mattresses that meet fire-prevention standards but without the health risks associated with synthetic flame retardants.

Why I Was Drawn to Naturepedic

Naturepedic stands out as a clear leader in the organic mattress industry, offering high-quality, non-toxic products that are better for health. However, when I first thought about Naturepedic years ago, the first thing that came to mind was crib mattresses. So, I had to dive into the back story: Naturepedic was founded in 2003 by Barry A. Cik, an Environmental Engineer. The inspiration for the company came when Barry was shopping for a crib mattress for his first grandchild. He was frustrated to find that most options contained harmful materials such as vinyl, polyurethane foam, and chemical flame retardants. Determined to provide a safer alternative, Barry worked with his sons to create an organic, non-toxic crib mattress. By 2009, Naturepedic expanded far beyond its early roots in crib mattresses, to include products for older children and adults. Today, their mattresses are trusted by families seeking healthier sleep for infants, children, and adults.

Made With High-Quality Non-Toxic Materials:
  • Organic Cotton Fabric + Fill: U.S.-grown, GOTS-certified organic cotton is used for both the cover and filling.
  • Organic Wool Batting: Naturally wicks away moisture, regulates temperature, and provides natural fire protection.
  • PLA Layer: A non-GMO, plant-based fiber (made from sugarcane!) that enhances resilience and moisture-wicking properties.
  • Organic Latex: Provides comfortable pressure relief and is made from the sap of a rubber tree.
  • Glueless Encased Coils: Unlike other hybrid mattresses that use adhesives, Naturepedic’s encased coils are entirely glue-free for optimal breathability and balanced support for proper postural alignment.
Extensive Certification:

Some of Naturepedic’s certifications include:

  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): GOTS is one of the most stringent certifications for organic textiles. It ensures that the entire production process, from harvesting to manufacturing, meets high criteria. A GOTS-certified product must contain at least 95% organic fibers and be free of toxic chemicals. This certification also ensures that the product is produced under fair labor conditions.
  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): This certification applies to the latex used in Naturepedic’s mattresses. It guarantees that the latex is made from 95% or more organic material and has been produced using environmentally-friendly methods, free from synthetic chemicals. It also verifies that the latex is processed in a way that is socially responsible.
  • Organic Content Standard (OCS): The OCS ensures that products are made with organic materials and tracks the flow of those materials throughout the entire supply chain. For a product to be OCS-certified, it must contain a minimum of 95% organic fibers. It provides transparency and traceability for customers who want to ensure the product is made with genuine organic materials.
  • Environmental Working Group (EWG): EWG is a non-profit organization that provides information about the ingredients in everyday products. Their certification indicates that Naturepedic mattresses meet strict health and environmental criteria, ensuring the absence of harmful chemicals. EWG’s strict standards help protect consumers from potential toxic exposure.
  • Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®): FSC certification ensures that the wood and paper products used in a mattress come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. This standard helps protect biodiversity, supports conservation, and ensures fair treatment of workers.
  • MADE SAFE®: The MADE SAFE® certification means the product is made without any known toxic chemicals. It is a comprehensive certification that ensures the materials are free of harmful substances like endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and other harmful chemicals. It’s particularly important for products intended for children and families.
  • GREENGUARD® Gold: The GREENGUARD® Gold certification indicates that the product has been tested for and meets strict indoor air quality standards. It’s especially important for products like mattresses, which emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). GREENGUARD Gold-certified products are proven to have low chemical emissions, contributing to healthier indoor air.
  • UL Formaldehyde Free: Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen commonly found in furniture and textiles. The UL Formaldehyde Free certification means that Naturepedic mattresses are free from formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals, promoting a healthier sleeping environment.
Made In The USA:

All Naturepedic mattresses are made in the USA, specifically in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Naturepedic EOS Classic Mattress: A Non-Toxic, Customizable Option

After five years of sleeping on my beloved Avocado Green Mattress with the pillow top, I knew it was time for a change. While I loved the quality, non-toxic materials, and luxurious comfort, I realized that my husband, who is a back sleeper, wasn’t as comfortable as I was. From the get-go, he wished I had went with the firm option, rather than the pillow-top. He often woke up with back pain, so I started to feel like we needed a mattress that better suited both of our needs.

Here’s what drew me to this mattress:

  • Customizable Dual Firmness Options: Choose from plush, medium, or firm comfort layers on both sides of the mattress – Ideal for couples who have different sleep preferences!
  • Replaceable Components: Instead of replacing the whole mattress over time, you can replace specific layers.
  • No Glues or Adhesives: The encased coils and latex layers are completely glue-free.
  • 100-Night Free Trial: Swap layers as many times as needed to find the perfect firmness level within the first 100 nights.
  • Certified Organic Materials: The entire mattress meets the highest standards of organic certification.

After reaching out to Naturepedic and having some discussions, they agreed to send me the EOS Classic mattress to test and review for my website.

When ordering any Naturepedic EOS mattress, if you’re getting a Queen, King, or California King size, you get to choose the firmness level per side: left side firmness & right side firmness. I chose Plush for my side, and Cushion-Firm for my husband’s side.

Here’s a firmness chart from Naturepedic’s website that helps to understand the firmness options available for the EOS Classic Organic Mattress:

Delivery & Setup

One of the first things I noticed about the Naturepedic EOS Classic was how easy it was to receive and assemble. Instead of one large, heavy and cumbersome box, the mattress arrived in five separate, manageable boxes:

  1. One box containing the organic mattress encasement
  2. Two boxes containing the 8-inch encased coils (each twin-sized for independent customization)
  3. Two boxes containing the 3-inch organic latex comfort layers

Each box was manageable enough for me to carry upstairs and unpack by myself (while my husband was busy plowing snow!).

The setup process was surprisingly intuitive. I didn’t need to watch an instruction video or read any manuals – though I later realized that Naturepedic does provide a helpful setup video on their website, which would have eliminated any guesswork. Even without it, I was able to assemble the mattress pretty effortlessly.

The zipper on the mattress encasement deserves its own mention – it’s the most heavy-duty zipper I’ve ever come across. At first, I was skeptical about trusting a zipper on a mattress, but it’s incredibly high quality and durable. Once getting everything unboxed and removing the packaging, the setup was as simple as unzipping the encasement, placing the two twin coil layers inside, followed by the two twin cushion layers, and then zipping everything up.

First Impressions & Initial Sleep Experience

The first time I laid on the mattress, I was blown away. My husband’s cushion-firm side felt firm but still comfortable, while my plush side was incredibly soft – I sank right in, and it felt like a dream. I was so excited to sleep on it.

The first few nights, I slept really well. But after about a week, I started waking up feeling like my back needed to be cracked. I also found myself waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I was sinking in too much, almost needing to put a pillow under my hips for extra support. That’s when I realized that, even though I thought I needed the softest, plushest mattresses, the Naturepedic plush coils + plush comfort layer were just too plush for me. It had much more of a buoyant feel than what I had been used to.

The 100-Night Layer Swap Experience

Thankfully, Naturepedic offers a 100-night layer swap, so I reached out to their customer service. I was quickly connected with a sleep specialist who was very helpful. He did suggest giving my body 30 days to adjust to the mattress, but I felt very confident that I needed more support sooner.

I decided to swap my plush comfort layer for the medium comfort layer – as displayed in the Comfort Level/Layer Configuration chart above, this was the next step up in firmness, but not as firm as my husband’s cushion-firm side. After speaking with the sleep specialist, I was transferred to customer service, and the entire swap process was seamless. They were friendly, helpful, and didn’t ask a million questions – just a smooth, easy exchange. The medium comfort layer arrived in just 3 days.

Sleeping on the Medium Firmness Layer

Now that I’ve had the medium comfort layer for a while, I can confidently say that I found the right firmness level for my side of the bed. The medium layer provides just the right amount of support without feeling too firm. I don’t wake up with the feeling of sinking in too much.

What I Love About the Naturepedic EOS Classic

  • No Odor: This was a huge win for me. Even my Avocado Green mattress had a latex/rubber smell that lingered for a while. The Naturepedic had zero smell – completely odorless from the moment we unboxed it.
  • Customizable Dual Firmness: One of the standout features of the Naturepedic EOS is the ability to customize each side of the mattress. With this mattress, my husband and I can each have exactly what we wanted without compromising.
  • Future-Proof: I love the idea that, instead of buying a whole new mattress down the line, I can just swap out layers as needed.
  • Organic & Non-Toxic: Obviously, one of the main reasons I chose Naturepedic. Knowing that I’m sleeping on certified organic, non-toxic materials gives me peace of mind.
  • Temperature Regulation: I don’t overheat at night, and the mattress stays cool and breathable.
  • Edge Support: Fantastic. I never feel like I’m about to slide off the bed when sitting or laying near the edge.
  • No Middle Seam: Even though my side is softer than my husband’s, there’s no noticeable seam or dip in the middle of the mattress. It transitions seamlessly, so if I lay in the center, I don’t feel an uneven split.
  • Not Too Heavy: The Naturepedic EOS Classic is lighter in weight than my Avocado Green Mattress, making it easier to tuck sheets under and move if/when needed.

Final Thoughts: Is the Naturepedic EOS Classic Mattress Worth It?

Absolutely. Naturepedic’s customizability has won me over. The fact that we were able to tailor each side of the mattress to our individual sleep preferences is what makes this mattress a perfect long-term fit for us. Plus, I love that instead of buying a whole new mattress in the future, we can just swap out layers as needed – making this feel like a truly long-lasting investment.

If you’re looking for an organic, non-toxic, highly customizable mattress, I highly recommend checking out the Naturepedic EOS – especially if you and your partner have different sleep preferences.
